Fifteen years ago I injured my back. What started with a slight and insignificant pain became more acute with time, I got to the point where I could not make long trips without being sedated, in meetings I preferred standing or in a hard chair a thousand times than sitting in an armchair . I was at a stage in my life where the priority was my professional career minimizing any ailment, total, youth to everything.
I was starting my design office and although I had my office with a relatively comfortable chair, my clients called me to come to work at their offices. It was more profitable because we charged more, especially since I introduced myself and did not send any of our designers.
As an external, I came with my computer (which weighed more than double the current ones), thousands of cables, from Ethernet, current, to read discs, reader of zips; wired mouse, a fan base to keep it from overheating and a notebook, all in a backpack worthy of someone who would go climbing Everest.
It was an impressive backpack that I carried all the time, even when I went to a restaurant to eat I brought it with me, it was preferable to leaving it alone in the car at the mercy of crime (15 years ago we were already living a wave of tremendous insecurity, not only now ).

Once in their offices, when there were no places available for someone who was on vacation or in a course, which was almost always, I had to work in the corner, full of papers and all kinds of cumbersome objects. The chair was also the one that was free, which was almost always the rattan, the one that could not be adjusted in height, with the rigid backrest (when I found one with a backrest) or, with the cushion about to expire the fabric that contains it, the one that nobody wanted or that they had changed for a better one.
I think that these two factors were the essentials that led me to my chronic pain, and if we add a third one: a lousy diet that ended up staying in my body as fat, a diagnosis was being formed that I was putting together when the pain became unbearable .
At this turning point I had to make certain decisions regarding the way I led my life: first an orthopedic vest that kept me from jorobarme to be at the height of my laptop screen. Second, change the mattress of my bed, which we had already turned and rotated in all possible configurations .; my backpack switched to a wheeled backpack / briefcase / suitcase hybrid for me to carry as little as possible and finally a new chair for work.
In my client’s office I started to get a little more fussy about the time I was there, as well as the quality of the chair where I would have to work and as a last resort a diet, why not?
I learned to bend down correctly, to have a routine of small morning exercises to relax the spine, it was a process of about a year for the pain to leave my body and be operational once again.

At this point I was looking to redesign the office, so I went to an office furniture store to see desks and cabinets. The saleswoman found her gold mine when I told her about my back problem, she became a professional orthopedist explaining the advantages of buying a high-end chair for a modest $ 1,100 dollars. “Try it,” she said completely sure of herself, “if your back hurts in a month, you return it to me.”
I accepted the challenge completely ignoring the regrets of my wallet and in less than a month I was already sitting in my brand new chair Aeron from Hermann Miller with lumbar support, adjustable armrests, backrest with rigid or mobile positions and I could even choose the size of the chair, small or large.
It was so comfortable that I searched by all means and not have to go to work at my client’s offices — prescription in hand to finish convincing him. After years, I semi-retired her and took her to my house so that the Home Office they were just as comfortable replacing it with a new one for my office. In it, I have spent endless days of work (up to 40 hours in a row, just getting up to eat and to the bathroom), without back pain, containing fatigue in a surprising way.
For this reason, when I give courses or talks on entrepreneurship, I emphasize the need to always consider a high-quality, ergonomic chair. Unlike one that you buy in price clubs or chain office stores, it will last you practically a lifetime, it will keep you with your back in perfect condition, even with youth on the surface.
A good chair, after a good computer, is the most valuable element in any designer office, so that you think about your work, not in the position that bothers you least.
