YouTube has been testing a new feature called ‘Shorts’ with some users for months. What is this function about? Does YouTube want to launch its own TikTok and rank above the most popular social network of the moment?
Many users with a creator profile can already try YouTube Shorts. From the “Shorts” function, users can record 15-second videos from their mobile, in the same way as on TikTok.
In recent years, the good data from TikTok has made big platforms very uneasy. The reason? In 2019 it had more than 33 million downloads.
Without a doubt, TikTok has been displaced from the rest of the social networks, such as Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. Will Google now be able to surpass this giant with YouTube Shorts?
Short videos on YouTube
No application download is required to use the Shorts feature. Short videos can be recorded from the YouTube app itself; so this functionality will be integrated.
At the moment, not all YouTube users can test this feature. It is only in a trial version for some who have a creator profile, both on iOs and on Android.
This means that there is very little left for YouTube to launch the Shorts and we can all enjoy it 🙂
How does YouTube Shorts work?
Its operation is intuitive and simple. When entering Shorts, the mobile camera will automatically open and a large button will appear on the screen.
When you press it, you will start recording, although you can stop it whenever you want to take several takes until you reach the allowed time (15 seconds maximum).
But let’s see in more detail how to record Shorts on YouTube.
- Once inside Shorts, select to try this feature.
- Then, give the option to ‘Create a video’, and you can record in two ways:
- Touch the button to activate it and touch it again to deactivate the process.
- Leave the button pressed and when you want to finish it, release the button.
Both with one way or another, you can make segments until you reach a video of 15 seconds in total.
Videos on YouTube in the TikTok style: What to keep in mind
What happens if a user makes a video of more than 15 seconds from the YouTube app with Shorts? This video cannot be uploaded to YouTube directly.
Note: If someone wants to upload a long video to YouTube (longer than 15 seconds), they will have to record from their mobile gallery.
On the other hand, users, in addition to making short videos, will be able to enjoy the music licenses found on Youtube Music, to put them as musical backgrounds in their own videos.
Something that yes or yes will make a difference with TikTok, since in this social network users can use their own sounds or similar audios, but not licenses.
Short video is a trending format, which can easily go viral. In fact, users prefer short videos to another type of format, as they summarize the main message in seconds and capture their attention. In addition, it entertains them and makes them disconnect thanks to its humorous and / or motivating touch.
So far, TikTok was the only platform that had managed to gather more users to make this type of videos. According to Wallaroo, it has 800 million active users per month.
However, Google wants to take action on the matter and prevent youtubers from opening an account on TikTok and being able to enjoy a similar function on YouTube, with Shorts.
Do you think Google will be up to the task and will be able to compete with TikTok? Or will TikTok have a new strategy to fight back?
