For the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, these pictograms were made with movement. The 73 pictograms were created by Japanese designer Masaaki Hiromura and animated by movement designer Kota Iguchi, also originally from Japan.
The design team recreated the athletes’ movements in 3D and transformed them into 2D. In turn, complex movements such as turns were included. Each version imagines a sport in complete sequence on a white background.
In 1964, Japan was the first to introduce static pictograms, and now it takes its innovative side back with the creation of these animated pictograms. Here is the complete video where you can see the pictograms in motion.
They are a very important visual support for all those tourists who do not read Japanese, for this same reason the pictograms were introduced for the first time at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. With this in mind and with the theme of this edition “Innovation from harmony”, It was that Hiromura was inspired to embody the uniqueness and athleticism of each sport, in addition to highlighting the dynamism of the athletes.

Designer Iguchi mentioned that it took them over a year to create the animated pictograms. He also expressed that although they are creations for Tokyo 2020, he hopes that his idea of moving pictograms will be transmitted to the future Games as a legacy for motion animation and video designers.
Olympics at risk from the Coronavirus
Until a few days ago there was talk of canceling the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the face of the global threat of the Coronavirus. However, all the preparations are still going on and the organizers are thinking only of a cut of the route to follow of the Olympic torch.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games are scheduled to take place between July 24 and August 9.
